George Benson

Born December 5, 1920 in New York City, George Libenson changed his name to Benson during the height of antisemitism in the US after WWII. He died January 28, 2007 in Sun City West, Arizona. George was raised in Bensonhurst, a section of Brooklyn, NY and graduated New Utrecht High School in 1938, City College of New York in 1942. He earned a Master’s and PhD in Marketing from New York University in 1959 after serving in the army until 1945. George married Lillian Abramowtiz on September 17, 1944 while on leave. They raised three children: Sheryl born in 1945, Larry in 1951 and Lisa in 1961 and were married 62 years.

George worked in the corporate world until 1960 then became an academic, joining the faculty at St John’s University in 1965 from which he retired as Chairman of the Department of Marketing in 1983. George and Lillian moved to Sun City West Arizona in 1985 and enjoyed a full retirement. His greatest interests were exercise, travelling, animals, and family. He loved classical music and had an extensive reel to reel collection. He was one of a kind with a great sense of humor and intellect. He is remembered by his children as a nonconformist, honest, unpretentious, morally upright and loving father. His memory lives on in them.
