Lillian Benson

Lillian (nee Abramowitz) Benson was born August 31, 1922 and died October 22, 2013. She was born in New York City and graduated from Newtown High School in 1938, Hunter College in 1942 and earned a Master’s degree in Education from the City University of New York in 1944. She married George Benson on September 17, 1944 during WWII. They had three children, Sheryl born in 1945, Larry in 1951 and Lisa in 1961. She had 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Raised in New Rochelle, Woodside and Jackson Heights, Lillian and her husband George, raised their family in Elmont, New York and retired to Sun City West in 1985. Married 62 years, and a teacher for 35 years she primarily taught home bound children for the City of New York, and retired in 1983. A lifelong Democrat and an active and committed member of her synagogue. Lillian was an early member of both the Elmont Jewish Center and Temple Beth Emeth in Sun City West. She achieved her dream of becoming Bat Mitzvah and regularly participated in weekly Shabbat services. She loved folk dancing, reading, playing the piano. She is remembered by her children as a lover of learning, a supporter of the Jewish community, a lover of the arts and a nurturing mother.
